Indications for a testicular ultrasound scan include:
- complaints of pain in the testicles and scrotum
- inflammatory conditions
- detection of nodules, thickening or other abnormalities on palpation
- enlarged scrotal organs
- infertility diagnostics
- urethral leakage
Indications for a prostate ultrasound scan include:
- pain in the lower abdomen and perineum
- greater need to urinate and a feeling of incomplete bladder emptying

An ultrasound scan of the testicles does not require any special preparation. In the case of a prostate ultrasound scan, preparation depends on how the test is performed. When testing is done through the rectum, it is recommended that both the bladder and bowels are emptied. However, when testing is done through the abdominal wall, the bladder should be filled, so it is recommended to drink about 1-1.5 litres of fluids before seeing the physician.
An ultrasound scan of the testes and prostate does not require any other tests to be performed beforehand.
