About testing
Practised approaches
Palpation examination
A breast ultrasound scan is usually preceded by a palpation examination. During the examination, the physician gently touches the patient’s breasts to look for any abnormalities such as tumours, thickening or other concerning alterations.
Ultrasound scan
During the scan, the physician applies a gel to the skin to help transmit the sound waves. The breasts and armpit pits are scanned; a special probe emits and receives sound waves, which are then converted into a three-dimensional or two-dimensional image of the breast glands.

Preparation
for testing
Indications for a breast ultrasound scan include:
- Breast redness and swelling;
- Breast pain;
- A palpable breast lesion;
- Presence of nipple discharge;
- Cases of breast cancer in a close family.
It is recommended that a breast examination be performed once a year, unless otherwise advised by a physician. A scan can be performed at any time, as no special preparations are required. However, it is preferable to do it in the first days of the menstrual cycle, when the breasts are least tender.
Immediately before a breast ultrasound scan, the patient should not use deodorants, antiperspirants, lotions or other cosmetics on the skin of the area to be tested (chest, armpit).
The Polish Ultrasound Society recommends that women over the age of 30 undergo a breast ultrasound scan at least once a year. If there is a family history of breast cancer, testing should be done every six months.
There are no contraindications to testing.
